Ian James

Principal Geophysicist

Ian graduated from the University of Southampton in 2008 with a BSc. (Hons.) in Geophysics.

After graduating, Ian joined Geoforce (GroundProbe Geophysics). There, he gained exposure to a broad range of geophysical techniques applied to near-surface and minerals projects. This included the application of SkyTEM, borehole and ground EM coupled with electrical and seismic methods.

Following his time at GroundProbe Geophysics, Ian consulted as Terraspect and collaborated with ASST Pty Ltd offering geophysical consulting and contracting predominantly in Australia and Africa. This included projects in the geotechnical, environmental, minerals and oil & gas industries.

In 2017, Ian joined HiSeis Pty Ltd as a Senior Geophysicist. Focussed on the minerals industry, he was involved in all stages of work, from survey design through to processing and interpretation of seismic data. He established the use of refraction tomography within HiSeis as a tool to aid in near-surface interpretation of seismic data.

Ian has considerable experience in the application of seismic methods, including projects using passive, 2D and 3D across six continents for a wide variety of commodity types and deposit styles. He has also travelled nationally and internationally to deliver courses on seismic data processing. Ian collaborates with the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa on research projects in their Seismic Research Centre.

He joined SGC in February 2022 as a Principal Geophysicist.

Ian is a member of AIG, SEG and ASEG, where he currently serves on the Federal Executive committee.
