David Hopper
Lead Development Engineer
David is a strategic technologist with a proven track record of leading complex projects to successful completion. He excels at aligning technology with overall business strategy to empower employees and accelerate business expansion. Adept at translating business objectives into actionable technology initiatives, David implements innovative solutions to streamline operations and drive growth.
David graduated from Griffith University, Australia, with degrees in Microelectronics Engineering (communications) and Information Technology (software engineering). In 2001, he moved to Perth and contributed to building a laser eye correction system (CustomVis), before returning to Queensland to complete a PhD in Applied Physics (Optics) from QUT, titled: ‘Investigation into Laser Frequency Stabilisation using Modulation Transfer Spectroscopy’.
After several years in Engineering Consulting and serving as a Test Engineering Manager at Cochlear in Brisbane, David co-founded NMRSA, a company specialising in the development and manufacture of downhole NMR tools for the mining and water industries. He moved back to Perth to establish engineering and manufacturing facilities and scale the business, eventually leaving the company in 2023.
In 2024, David joined SGC, bringing with him a blend of innovative thinking, a creative mindset, and commercial acumen. His expertise enables him to quickly understand and resolve complex issues with a procedural and analytical approach.
With a strong foundation in engineering, IT, and physics, David has consistently dedicated his career to integrating and applying modern technologies for societal betterment. Whether pioneering cutting-edge solutions or adapting existing technologies across industries, his focus remains on driving positive change and improving lives. David also volunteers as the President of the school Dad’s club and participates in STEM-related initiatives in schools, representing CSIRO and the UWA Einstein First Program.
